Customer Software Required for Dedicated Access to the Internet
- Domain Name Service (DNS) software to run on your Internet server. DNS is a distributed database system for translating computer names into numeric IP (Internet Protocol) addresses, and vice-versa.
- E-mail server software, including Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) to route mail onto the Internet and Post Office Protocol 3 (POP-3) to receive and distribute messages between the e-mail server and individual users.
- InterNetNews (INN) software to run on your Internet news server. We recommend a separate, high performance server to handle your Usenet news feed.
- Web server software, such as Netscape's Communication or Commerce server software, if you want to "publish" a home page on the WWW.
- TCP/IP protocol stack installed on each end-user host or client. Optionally, you may install a gateway that will provide the translation between your LAN protocol and TCP/IP which is the protocol of the Internet.
- E-mail package installed on each end-user host or client.
- Web browser such as Netscape Navigator installed on each host. The browser can also interface to the HTML files on disk. Usually included with the Web browser is FTP, a program which moves files using the File Transfer Protocol.
- Telnet may also be installed on each host. Telnet is a program which allows you to log on to another computer system using the Telnet protocol.
- Internet server system administration tools which allow a user to configure the network, set up multiple users, manage disk space, etc.
- Router network debugging tools, such as traceroute and ping.
